THE TOLPUDDLE MARTYRS - HAMPSHIRE UNION AND FRIENDS

A 30m programme featuring local group Hampshire Union ( Dudley Savage, Bob Crease, Jon Witcher, Chris Mitchell and Geoff Jerram) plus Karen Mitchell and Harold Penney.

Broadcast on BBC Radio Solent as part of the Folkscene with Sibby Wednesday night programmes. Date unknown.

This recording was rescued and digitised from a home-produced CD-R in the John Edgar Mann archive by Paul Marsh. The CD was suffering from CD rot and many of the tracks sounded like the worst excesses of a 78rpm disc. It was almost unlistenable to. Thankfully Paul was able to restore the recording and it is as good as he can get it. There may still be the odd click.

Geoff Jerram produced the CD-R which was in John Edgar Mann's collection.

PORTSMOUTH: HUNG, DRAWN AND QUARTERED

A FOLK OPERA featuring local singers, written by Paul Hawkins and Adge Henshaw.

Portsmouth; Hung, Drawn and Quartered was written for a competition at the fourth Folk Under Aries at Romsey in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Year (1977). The competitors were three of the Southampton folk clubs with their plays:- "Danger! Lobsters", "Poaching Menace" and "Fierce Fighting at Cheriton". It was toured like a mummers play around the folk clubs (complete with tape recorded sound effects) where it was always well received.

A recording of 'Portsmouth; Hung Drawn and Quartered' by Shep Woolley, broadcast on Radio Victory in 1979, has just come to light. It features some fine renditions by persons at the peak of their ability and two or three songs not recorded elsewhere. It appears on Hampshire Voices courtesy of Shep.

Cast:
Capt Maurice Suckling: Tom Lewis, Chichester FC
Lord Horatio Nelson: Paul Hawkins, Broadside FC
Prince William Henry: "Dolly" Gray, Railway FC
Female Seaman: Ginger Joe, Southsea Belles Morris
Narrator: Adge Henshaw
